Cycle Touring
In the past, I've ridden lots of short and mid-length trips in California, a three month tour in New Zealand, and two weeks from Seattle to as far North as Vancouver. Next year, we're planning on taking a month off to do some touring in the Four Corners area.
Last summer my wife and I got engaged while cycle touring Alaska with three friends of ours.
Here are brief descriptions of the tours I've done. In the future, they will link to pages with longer descriptions, with routes, mileage and pictures.
- The first tour I rode was two weeks along the coast of California from Ventura to Palo Alto and back. A friend and I did it just out of high school, no prior experience with bike touring.
- A three day loop from Ojai, through the Cuyama valley, out to Santa Maria, and back to Ojai via San Marcos Pass and Santa Barbara.
- Another three day loop east of San Diego. Julian, down into the desert near Anza Borego State Park, and back through the Cuyamuca valley to Julian.
- Three weeks from Oakland to San Francisco, the hard way. North to Davis and onto Chico. From there, into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, cresting at almost 9000' going over Mt. Lassen. Then out to the coast at Eureka, where some really nice guy invited us back to his place to shower (really in Blue Lake). From Eureka, it was easy sailing down the coast to San Francisco.
- Three months in New Zealand. This trip was probably the most fun. My friend John Halunen and I flew into Auckland February 5th, leaving May 5th, and in between jumping off a bridge 300' over the shallow river below, white water rafting IV+ rapids, getting about a billion flat tires, and meeting some fantastically friendly people.
- Two weeks with my now ex-wife, Adrienne Weiss, in a loop from Seattle, out onto the Olympic Peninsula, North through the San Juan Islands to Victoria, B.C. with a brief excursion up to Vancouver, then back South to the Olympic National Park, and back to Seattle. We climbed over 10000' on that trip.
- June of 1996 was a 3 month odyssey in Alaska and the Yukon. We flew into Juneau, then after taking a ferry and a train to the Canadian border, we started riding. We went north to Dawson City, then west from there, over the Top of the World Highway to Boundry, AK. From there, north again to Eagle, AK where our bikes got on a plane to Fairbanks and we got on a raft for 7 days on the Yukon river. For more, click here.
