2008 Rock and Roll Marathon, San Diego! Felt pretty lousy from the heat & humidity at the start of the race. Mentally wasn't "in it", but managed to put in a decent 10K, on pace for a 5:00 hour finish like I was shooting for. Unfortunately, after about 9 miles, my right knee (which I'd never had trouble with in practice) suddenly started hurting; soft tissue on the outside of the knee was inflamed. I almost abandoned at that point (partly from the pain, but mostly because I wasn't sure what the injury was and if I could do real damage by continuing to run on it), but figured I'd at least go to the TNT 1/2 Marathon and get that medal. After reaching the 1/2 finish, I got some medical attention (just a bag of ice strapped to my knee) and walked around a bit talking to some friends from the TNT chapter who'd finished their 1/2. Volunteers kept coming up to me trying to cut the timing 'chip' off my shoe, and kept having to wave them away saying, "you can't have that yet, I'm doing the full." After a few times, I figured I'd better make that true and headed back out on the course and managed to run, walk & limp my way to the finish. Official chip time: 6:28:17, not great, but about 17 minutes better than my 2002 Maui Marathon, and even the official 'clock time' of 6:37:46 was better by 6:31

"Buddy Run" around Sebastopol with Katie. I left her at Brook Haven Park and then did a loop and then tried to catch her as she headed straight back on Pleasant Hill to home. Managed to do the 3rd mile in 9:21, but still didn't catch Katie before she got home. Tweaked my right calf a little, but it's feeling fine the next day.

Long run @ Cloverdale. Ran all the way to Geyserville and back. Well, not all the way back, only about 1/2 way back. The heat, combined with the 2 miles "extra" I did going from the last water stop @ 8 miles back into Geyserville and back again put me way at the back of the pack. Since we had friends coming over that afternoon, when the support car pulled up beside me and offered me a ride, I took it! Still got 15+ miles in. Driving to the start, it looked like most everyone ahead of me was walking too, since the heat was so bad by then.

Didn't do too well. Should have been running for 3:30, but only ran about 2:30, over 3:07. Came down with a cold the day before and had some lower back pain from moving bales of hay earlier in the week, so I did a lot of walking. Still managed 11.5 miles, but it should have been closer to 18 :-(

Somewhat boring, but at least mostly flat run around John F. Kennedy Memorial Park in Napa, CA. Sort of a figure 8, with the top loop much bigger than the bottom. One cool thing was there were people there flying their remote-controlled airplanes, so that was distracting from the running. Also, I didn't realize that Napa had "marina houses", where the back of the house has a dock on the Napa River.

Three hour long-run. Wow, that hurt. Walked the last mile or so with a lady who was having trouble with her calves. I was pretty footsore and didn't have any 'juice' left, but at least nothing really hurt. Once I stopped though, my back tried to sieze up and then driving home, my left quadricept cramped. That was (not) fun!

Just an easy loop from home to make up for missing Tuesday's run because it was raining. And Monday's run because I'm lazy :-) Took Toba (our younger dog), and and after about 1.5 she didn't feel much like running anymore, so my pace was a bit slower for the 2nd half.

Was pretty much a slacker this week. Skipped everything but the long run @ Samuel Taylor park. The run wasn't too bad, nice and flat in the redwoods. Only problem is that it took about 0.9 miles before the GPS picked up my location so the run was really 8.34 instead of the 7.44 that registered.

Boy the long runs are getting long! 12 Miles today. And hilly. From the beginning it was a steep uphill and then some rollers, decending back to lower than the start, then back the way we came. Had some trouble keeping running on the hills on the way back.

More track work. Felt pretty good, though my paces on the intervals wasn't as good as the previous week. At least I wasn't nearly as sore the next day and the day after that, like I was when I did way too many lunges.

A 'brutal' trailrun from the Point Reyes National Seashore Visitor Center @ Bear Valley (near Olema) out to Arch Rock and back. The trail was in good shape, except right at the coast, but the hillyness of the course made it very difficult.

Long run from the back side of Analy High School here in Sebastopol, out along the bike path toward Santa Rosa. Made it just a little past Wright Road, maybe 1/3 of the way from there to Stony Point before the time cutoff to turn back.

Group long run in Napa, starting at Skyline Park. Felt pretty bad, with a sinus & chest infection, and just getting over the back spasm I had last Saturday. Still I managed to run 8 miles in 1:41, just a bit over the 1:30 max they set for us. Forgot my HR strap, didn't really expect to run it anyway.

Long run and all teams potluck. This one was in Sonoma, starting just north of the Square at the Depot Museum. Was a bit hilly, had to walk some of the steep parts. Later in the eve., after a lot of sitting thruout the day, my lower back siezed up when trying to get out of the car. No more runs until next Sat.

First road run training with the group. Nice area to run in, but the turn around was the bottom of the run, so you felt great going down the hill, and then had to turn around and suffer going back up to Dry Creek Road.
